Backup power function Independence in the event of a power outage

Photovoltaics with backup power function

PV system owners want maximum independence with their PV system – even during power failures and grid disturbances. In order to provide the household with an optimal supply of energy during a power outage, Fronius hybrid inverters have an integrated backup power function that can be perfectly adapted to various customer needs.

Advantages of a photovoltaic system with backup power function

Maximum independence and flexibility: this brief description perfectly sums up the backup power functions offered by Fronius. Maximum independence is provided by the single-phase or three-phase backup power supply, which is integrated as standard in all hybrid inverters. This automatically supplies the household with energy during a power outage via the PV module array and battery. Maximum flexibility is achieved thanks to the Multi Flow Technology, making it possible to continue charging the battery using the PV module array during a power outage while at the same time supplying the household with electricity.

  • Needs-based backup power variants
  • Basic backup power supply integrated with the PV Point as standard*
  • Full backup option for maximum independence

*on all Fronius GEN24 and GEN24 Plus inverters

Basic backup power supply & complete independence

Basic backup power supply with the PV Point

The Fronius GEN24 Plus and the Fronius GEN24 as a non-hybrid inverter come with an integrated basic backup power supply that does not require any additional complex installation work. This supplies single-phase loads with up to 3 kW of continuous power via a protected socket or a small circuit during a power failure. This way, PV system owners can charge a mobile phone or laptop with no problem, keeping them charged during a power outage.

This basic backup power supply is even more user-friendly with the PV Point Comfort, which ensures selected loads have a power supply not only during power outages, but also continuously and reliably in parallel grid operation. As an accessory, it can be easily retrofitted into the inverter.

Advantages

  • Automatic activation in the event of power failure
  • No complex additional installations required
  • Supply single-phase loads up to 3 kW
  • No manual reconnection with PV Point Comfort

Full Backup option for maximum independence

With the Full Backup option, maximum independence and flexibility can be achieved with the Fronius GEN24 Plus hybrid inverter. In the event of a power failure, the inverter switches to emergency power mode using a grid switching device, in either a fully automatic or manual process. This supplies the entire household with energy via the photovoltaic system and the battery. This makes it possible to supply both smaller single-phase and larger loads like electric cookers or heat pumps.

A battery storage system and a switchover device for safe network disconnection are required for this. Thanks to integrated Multi Flow Technology in the hybrid inverter, the loads can be supplied by the PV system and the battery during a grid failure. If sufficient PV energy is being generated, it is also possible to supply loads and charge the battery simultaneously in the event of a power outage.

Advantages

  • Supplying the entire household including large loads such as heat pumps
  • Grid switching device tailored to customer needs for switching to emergency power mode
  • Efficient energy flows also possible in a backup power situation

The advantages at a glance

With the PV Point backup power variant, a socket is connected to the inverter. This socket can be used to operate household electrical appliances in the event of a power outage. Emergency power solutions that include the PV Point Comfort have the advantage that connected loads are continuously supplied with energy. And that doesn’t just mean solar power, but also grid current if necessary.

With the full backup option, if a power failure occurs the hybrid inverter automatically disconnects the building from the public grid. The electricity required is supplied to the household from the PV module array and the battery storage system. In conjunction with the Fronius Smart Meter, the Fronius GEN24 Plus hybrid inverter ensures that the household circuit remains disconnected from the public grid until the fault or outage has been rectified and normal grid operation has been restored.

Safely supplied in the event of a power outage

“We want to supply our entire household with PV electricity in the event of a power outage. It was therefore clear that we were looking for an inverter that could do this. There aren’t that many that can, but we have found one in the Fronius GEN24 Plus.”
